What’s At Stake – Christine Locke

Christine quote

Dear Opponents of Invest in Education,

I am writing to express my hope that you will consider education important enough to support it by allowing the Invest in Ed initiative to be placed on the ballot. It is my understanding that the objection to the petitions was that the 100 word summary did not include everything. With complex initiatives that has become a problem due to the fact that not everything can be fit into 100 words. Most all people have some contact with education in their life and form a very blunted view of education. That was certainly true of my own 21 years of being educated. Then there was my children’s experiences in education that I witnessed more from a distance. I really had no idea how devoted you have to be to do a good job as an educator until I entered the field myself. I worked in a high school district for 38 years and really didn’t mind the extra time I spent all of those years because it was for the kids. I had witnessed the same with my mother’s career as an elementary teacher for about 30 years. Some people thought she got a lot of time off which was really untrue unless you don’t count all of the time spent in the summer preparing for the coming year and many, many nights spent grading papers and preparing for the next day. Education has always needed more support and support has consistently dwindled over the years. Please allow the people to decide if they want to “Invest in Ed”.

Sincerely,

Christine Locke
